An EU MSCA Joint Doctoral Training Network on

INTEGRATED PHOTONICS SPECTROSCOPY FOR PROTEINS

Using Metasurfaces and Interband/Quantum Cascade Devices

4 Ph.D. POSITIONS STILL AVAILABLE

DEADLINE: 23:59 CET, Wed 4th June 2025

Watch this short video for an overview of PROTEMIC

A major Technology Gap today is the

LACK OF DYNAMICAL MONITORING OF PROTEIN STRUCTURAL CHANGES

The structure of proteins is crucial in determining how they behave. Incorrect folding can lead to:

LOSS OF FUNCTION

LOSS OF THERAPEUTIC EFFECTIVENESS

INCREASED IMMUNOGENICITY

REDUCED PRODUCT SHELF LIFE

Medical and pharmaceutical industries hence have an unmet need for in-situ, dynamic monitoring of proteins

PROTEMIC will address this need by combining the fields of

PHOTONICS

SPECTROSCOPY

PROTEIN ANALYSIS

DRUG DISCOVERY

to demonstrate a new paradigm of in-situ measurements of protein denaturation

ADVANCED IN-SITU SPECTROSCOPY TECHNIQUES

DYNAMIC PROTEIN REACTION MONITORING

NOVEL MID-INFRARED LASER SOURCES

FELLOWSHIPS ARE 45 MONTHS DURATION

EACH FELLOW IS RECRUITED BY 2 PARTNERS, SPENDING APPROX 50% AT EACH CO-HOST

PROJECTS ARE GROUPED INTO 3 THEMES (WORK PACKAGES)

THE Ph.D. FELLOWS IN THE PROTEMIC NETWORK WILL:

Study in 2 European countries (Ireland/Germany/Austria/Spain)

Be awarded a Ph.D. degree from 2 universities (double degree/cotutelle)

Become a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow with full salary and benefits

Gain industry experience either part-based in industry or through a secondment

Undertake Multi-disciplinary research & training in integrated photonics, spectroscopy and protein science

Be Part of an interlinked team of 12 Fellows working towards common goals

MSCA Eligibility Rules

Researchers may be of any nationality. However, they must undertake physical, trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment.
Mobility is defined as: the researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment*. This applies to the first recruiting host for each position.
Candidates must not be in possession of a doctoral degree already (whether already awarded, or defended and awaiting award).
*Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, or time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention, are not taken into account.

ABOUT MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE DOCTORAL NETWORKS

PROTEMIC is funded through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), which are part of the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation funding programme. The Actions consist of a number of Research Fellowship instruments which support researchers at all stages of their careers, regardless of age and nationality. Researchers working across all disciplines are eligible for funding. The MSCA also support cooperation between industry and academia and innovative training to enhance employability and career development.

The Doctoral Networks (DNs) Actions drive scientific excellence and innovation by bringing together networks of universities, research institutes and other sectors from across the world, to train Doctoral Candidates (DCs) to the doctorate level. They can address any research topic, and represent an unrivalled opportunity for young researchers to undertake Ph.D. studies at world-leading institutes in collaboration with a cohort of fellow DCs, with network-wide training events and industry secondments.

PROTEMIC  is a specific type of DN, a Joint Doctorate. These DN-JDs have the added benefit that the network awards joint, double or multiple degrees, so that the recruited DCs will study in at least two partner institutes. Hence, it is a unique and extremely rewarding experience for any young researcher lucky enough to join the network!
