The first PROTEMIC Workshop was held on 25-27 February 2026 in Würzburg, Germany, hosted by partner nanoplus GmbH at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg. The workshop, entitled “Semiconductor Growth and Fabrication for Photonics”, brought together the Doctoral Candidates for their first face-to-face meeting as a full group and was designed to provide the DCs with in-depth knowledge of semiconductor sources and detectors relevant to the PROTEMIC research programme, while also creating opportunities to collaborate across the different work packages and participating institutions.
The agenda included tutorial sessions on mid-IR laser spectroscopy for the analysis of liquids and nano-IR imaging, semiconductor lasers, semiconductor growth, and modelling devices using the nextnano software, all of which complemented the DCs’ individual research activities by providing broader insight into the fabrication, operation, and modelling of semiconductor devices.
The meeting also included a Mid-Term Review meeting with the EU Project Officer, where the DCs gave a short update on their project’s objectives and planning, and the DCs also met privately with the PO for feedback and questions.
As well as detailed technical discussions and lab tours, the group also had the opportunity for a wine tasting tour at Julius Spital. During the workshop, the DCs filmed a short social media video to introduce themselves – watch below. Stayed tuned for the first newsletter coming soon, which will showcase the new DCs!
