[The coordinator, MTU, published the following press release to advertise the open positions in PROTEMIC]
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MONDAY, 13TH JANUARY, 2025 – Munster Technological University, in collaboration with the Centre for Advanced Photonics & Process Analysis (CAPPA) are calling on prospective doctoral PhD students to apply to its PROTEMIC Marie Curie Doctoral Network program.
Funded by the European Union, the program will support 12 double degree doctoral students across 10 institutes and industry partners in the EU: Nanoplus Nanosystems and Technologies GmbH (Germany), InsuCaps Ltd (Ireland), Technische Universität Wien (Austria), Health Research Institute La Fe (Spain), Fraunhofer IAF (Germany), Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland), The Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg (Germany), Tyndall National Institute (Ireland), University of Valencia (Spain) and MTU. 9 of the 12 will be registered as PhD students in MTU.
PROTEMIC focuses on protein analysis as proteins are the fundamental building blocks of life. Modern medicine and the pharmaceutical industry have an unmet need for dynamic, in-situ monitoring of structural changes of proteins to increase therapeutic effectiveness, reduce immunogenicity and increase product shelf life. The PROTEMIC partners are ideally placed to provide disruptive solutions to this problem.
PROTEMIC is a Double Doctorate Training Network that brings together the disciplines of Physics, Analytical Chemistry and Biochemistry to determine protein structure from a sample’s Mid Infrared absorption spectrum without the use of labels or reagents. The project builds and expands on breakthroughs recently made in another Doctoral Network project led by MTU, the OPTAPHI project.
Commenting on the project, PROTEMIC’s Coordinator, Dr Liam O’Faolain of CAPPA at MTU said: “PROTEMIC represents a groundbreaking step forward in protein analysis, merging cutting-edge photonics and spectroscopy to empower pharmaceutical advancements. This project will enable researchers to unravel protein dynamics with unparalleled precision, driving innovation in medicine and beyond. We encourage all those considering applying to seize this unique opportunity”
The deadline for applications is 23:59 CET, Friday, January 31 2025. Applications can be submitted at www.protemic.eu/apply/. Applicants must meet MSCA Eligibility Requirements regarding mobility (moving country), and application submissions will only be accepted via the online form on the website. About MTU
Munster Technological University is the southwest’s newest technological university consisting of six campuses across Cork and Kerry. The University has a student body of 18,000. It is a leader in higher education both regionally and internationally through the provision of a wide range of programmes ranging from apprenticeships and undergraduate degrees to Master’s and PhDs.
About CAPPA
The Centre for Advanced Photonics & Process Analysis (CAPPA) is at the forefront of photonics research in Ireland. Photonics is the study of the generation and manipulation of light, and is an important enabling technology for a wide range of applications. The world market for photonics products is estimated to be €844 billion, some €121 billion of which is produced in Europe. The revenue growth rate for the European photonic industry was 6.5% for 2019-2022, outpacing the entire European GDP (2%/year). CAPPA is a research centre of Munster Technological University, conducting both applied and fundamental research on photonics for applications in areas as diverse as telecommunications, medical devices, food and pharmaceutical manufacturing. CAPPA has a strong track record both in leading European research projects, and in engaging with regional industry.
